More than 200 international participants visited state of the art lectures on safe implementation of TaTME, with internationally renowned speakers. The conference was organized in cooperation with the COLOR workgroup, AIS Channel, ILAPP SURGERY foundation and International TaTME Registry Collaborative.
Transanal TME, a new treatment for rectal cancer, is expected to revolutionize surgical treatment. During TaTME, the rectum is dissected transanally according to TME principles using endoscopic instruments; a down to up TME. Advantages are obvious and with improved visualization of surgical plains, the specimen quality is consistently good.
Expectations are high, but only a few centers have enough expertise. Widespread adoption is slow due to the need for new instruments, a long learning curve, the need for traveling expert-teachers and a possible reluctance due to reports on serious complications. However, TaTME brought together a new generation of surgeons sharing experiences and results in an open and honest way. TaTME brought international cooperation through the TaTME worldwide registry and development of new training methods such as a prerequisite cadaver course and a unique app for an online personalized course on TaTME.
